My Business: How to add it to Google Maps?

With over a billion people using Google Maps every month to find their way around the world it is no surprise this is the most popular navigation app in the United States. But besides showing its users the fastest routes back home or to work, it has multiple functions and tools that can increase visibility to your business.

If you haven’t used Google Maps to boost your business then you are missing out. But don’t worry, in this blog entry we’ll guide you through the necessary steps to add your business on Google Maps and make it easier to find.

Why should you add, claim and verify your business on Google Maps?

Besides being discoverable, keeping tabs on your business profile on Google Maps is a great way to increase its visibility and (most importantly) ranking.

Wait a second, I thought that ranking only worked for Google Search Results. Yes, but actually no.

Ranking Higher on local search through Google Maps could be more important than you think. For example: let’s say someone opens up a “pizzeria” their business is competing with every other restaurant nearby, and when a Google user decides to ask maps for recommendations, those businesses with higher rankings will appear above the rest.

To increase your ranking on Google Maps it is important to update your business profile, add pictures, answer questions and reply to reviews (both positive and negative). That way Google will “reward” you by increasing your position on the map’s results.

But enough talking, let’s get the tutorial going.

Note: This tutorial is to add your business using a computer, although you can do it on a smartphone or tablet we’ve found it is easier to do it on a PC or Mac.

If your business does not appear on Google Maps, this is what you have to do:

Step 1: Go to: maps.google.com

Click on the icon at the upper right hand corner to sign in to your Google Account. (Keep in mind that this is the account that will have the ability to add, modify, or delete any information about your business, we recommend that you choose an account exclusively for this purpose.)

Once you’ve signed in, your Profile picture should appear on the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Step 2: Add your Business

Adding your business to Google is really simple and it can be done in three different ways:

  1. Type your business’ address in the search bar.
  2. Right-click anywhere on the map. Then on the drop down menu, click “Add your Business”
  1. Click on the three bars that are next to the search bar and choose the option “Add your Business”.

Step 3: Answer the Questions

Once you do any of the three options to add your business, you’ll be taken to a new screen. Just answer the questions, and fill out the forms and you’ll be good to go!

Google says that it may take a few business days to have your information displayed on Google Maps but speaking from experience it only takes a couple of minutes.

Now, let’s say your business does appear on Google Maps but you didn’t create it, and it is displaying incorrect information that you want to change. Instead of creating a new one, you can claim it. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Go to: maps.google.com

Click on the icon at the upper right hand corner to sign in to your Google Account. (Keep in mind that this is the account that will have the ability to add, modify, or delete any information about your business, we recommend that you choose an account exclusively for this purpose.)

Once you’ve signed in, your Profile picture should appear on the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Step 2: Find your Business

We recommend that you search it by its name as the address might be wrong.

Step 3: Claim It

Once you’ve found it click on the option “Claim this Business”

Step 4: Verify Ownership

After claiming your business, Google will ask you to prove that you are really the owner of that business. This can be done in multiple ways, either on the phone or through an email.

Just follow the instructions on the screen and you’ll become the owner of the Business on Google Maps in no time.

…and that’s it! Easy as it sounds.

By now you should be able to add (or claim) your business on Google Maps. Remember this is a great tool to increase foot traffic and discoverability. Both locals and tourists use Google Maps on the daily for recommendations, finding out new places, or simply seeing what’s around them.

What started as a navigation tool evolved into a marketing and advertising pathway to your business. Take advantage of it. And yes, if you are wondering you can launch an advertising campaign on Google Maps (you can even add a pin for all users to see). But that’s a topic for another entry.

FAQs

Why isn’t my business showing up on Google?

Because you haven’t created a Business profile for it, nor has enough relevance for Google to create it automatically. In this blog entry we teach you how to do it yourself.

How to add Facebook reviews to your business on Google?

Google does this automatically, but you need to have the same contact information (address, name, phone number, and website) on both platforms. That way, Google’s algorithm understands that it is the same business.

How to verify my business on Google Maps?

To verify your business and disable editing capabilities to other users you’ll need to submit a verification request that can be fulfilled through a phone call, text, email, or even video. It can take weeks for Google to review your information but once everything is approved, you’ll see a check mark next to your business profile.
